Easter Sunday: Its Symbols and Meanings and How Filipinos Celebrate It + GIVEAWAY

Today, April 21, 2019, many Christians from around the world are celebrating Easter Sunday. It is a day of joy and celebration to commemorate that Jesus Christ is risen, according to their belief.

Each year, Easter falls on a Sunday between March 21 and April 25, depending on when there’s a full moon in Spring.

Regardless of denomination, there are many Easter-time traditions with roots that can be traced to non-Christian and even pagan or non-religious celebrations.

The naming of the celebration as “Easter” seems to go back to the name of a pre-Christian goddess in England, Eostre, who was celebrated at beginning of spring.

Meanwhile, according to the Bible, Jesus was then resurrected and came back to life on Easter Sunday. This is the most important day in the Christian calendar. The Latin and Greek Pascha (“Passover”) provides the root for Pâques, the French word for Easter.

Easter Eggs, Easter Egg-Hunting and the Easter Bunny

Easter eggs and the Easter Bunny are both fertility symbols. Rabbits are well known for their rapid rate of reproduction, so they became a symbol of new life.

The Easter rabbit is said to lay the eggs as well as decorate and hide them. In the United States the Easter rabbit also leaves children baskets with toys and candies on Easter morning, hence, the birth of easter egg-hunting.

Despite claims that there is no significant meaning that would link rabbits to Christian belief, these have now developed into the tradition that many people enjoy today – especially the kids! 🙂

Commemorating the Holy Week and Easter – the Filipino Way

The Philippines, being one of Asia’s most predominantly Christian country, with at least 80.58% of Filipinos belonging to the Catholic Church, mark and treat the Holy Week as one of the most important dates there is.

Easter Sunday is immediately preceded by Holy Week, which includes Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (which are regular holidays in the country), and Black Saturday.

Most Filipinos, being known as religious and family-oriented, will spend time at church in thought and prayer and do the Visita Iglesia (Church Visit). It is a Holy Week practice where devotees visit and pray in at least 7 separate churches,

Some may take this as an opportunity to be with their families and loved ones for their long-thought and much-awaited reunions at home or at a beach or in their hometown or someplace else.
